EAST BRUNSWICK–The Board of Education recognized the East Brunswick High School varsity girls’ tennis team for its state championship achievement this fall.
Skillful play along with motivation, determination and exemplary team sportsmanship led the East Brunswick High School varsity girls’ tennis team to an awesome season record of 21-0, the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division title, the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship, the Central Jersey, Group 4 state sectional title, the overall Group 4 state championship and the Tournament of Champions state title, according to the board agenda.
The state title for East Brunswick was its first since 2008.
This accomplishment, a tribute to the dedication and commitment of these student-athletes, has brought local and state recognition to their school, the district and to the community.
The East Brunswick Board of Education stated that it recognizes and commends East Brunswick High School tennis team members Naomi Karki, Phoebe Su, Katie Wong, Anagha Shankar, Christina Steiner, Adriana Macotela, Lexi Roshkovan and their coach, Deborah Mangino, for this outstanding achievement.
Mangino shared the experiences of her team this season.
“I never expected that we would end up having such an amazing season. Something to be said for no expectations no disappointment. We just kept playing match after match and winning,” Mangino said. “We were always in the moment. Never looking past the match we were in. Next thing you know we were competing in the Tournament of Champions. We kept the same mentality.”
“Just kept playing like we had been. Strong, focused, determined. The mental strength these athletes demonstrated is remarkable. Always fighting to the bitter end, and it paid off state champs,” Mangino said. “It was an amazing journey with an exceptional group of young ladies. It was an honor to have experienced it with them.”
