East Brunswick finishes with best football record since 2010

The East Brunswick High School football team won three out of its final five games this fall to finish the season with a 4-5 record.

That showing resulted in the best season for the Bears since 2010. East Brunswick finished with a 6-4 record in 2010.

East Brunswick was sparked on offense by junior tailback Austin Percy, who ran for a team-high 600 yards and four touchdowns.

East Brunswick’s quarterback Zach Zebro recorded four touchdowns through the air and on the ground during his junior campaign. Zebro finished with 785 yards passing and 351 yards rushing on the season.

Sophomore running back Noriano Smith found the end zone three times.

Smith and Percy each had a rushing touchdown in East Brunswick’s 15-13 NJSIAA Regional Crossover loss against Sayreville War Memorial High School on Nov. 7 to close the season.

Monroe records first four-victory season in four years

A hard fought 21-20 victory over John F. Kennedy High School of Iselin on Nov. 1 gave the Monroe High School football team its first four-victory season since 2015.

Seniors Dylan Gorhan and Michael Torsiello engineered the high powered Monroe offense that averaged a little over 27 points a game.

Gorhan had a nice year at quarterback for Monroe. The senior threw for 1,361 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also racked up six touchdown runs on the ground, giving him 19 total scores this season for the Falcons.

In just six games played out of the backfield, Torsiello rushed for a team-high 796 yards and seven touchdowns.

Monroe finished the season with a mark of 4-5.

Bounce back season for Spotswood

After winning only one game in 2018, the Spotswood High School football team bounced back this fall by winning four games and finishing with a 4-6 record.

Spotswood’s rushing attack of Anthony Dove and Shae Griffin fueled the team’s offensive production this fall.

Dove rushed for a team-high 753 and eight touchdowns, while Griffin picked up 543 yards on the ground and produced four touchdowns to give Spotswood a nice one-two punch in the backfield.

Senior fullback Matt Bohinski did a great job in his short-yardage back role for the Chargers, racking up six touchdowns.

South River ends season on five-game winning streak

Through the first five games of 2019 season, the South River High School football team stood at a game below .500.

The Rams stepped up their game up to the next level in the final five contests of the season, winning all of them by averaging just shy of 37 points per game and finishing the season with a 7-3 record.

The running back duo of the Cincere Mccrary and Austin Soares were scoring machines for the Rams out of the backfield.

Mccrary rushed for a team-high 675 yards and eight touchdowns in just eight games played during his senior season.

Soares found the end zone a lot during his junior season, recording a team-high 10 touchdowns on the ground with 611 yards rushing. The junior also had a touchdown reception out of the backfield for the Rams.
