A fire that apparently began on the stove in a Princeton-Hightstown Road home roused the occupants out of bed shortly before 6 a.m. on Nov. 29, according to the West Windsor Police Department.
The residents were awakened to the sound of smoke detectors and found the house was filled with smoke, police said.
They left the house and called 911 at 5:56 a.m. to report the fire.
The police officers who arrived at the scene went to the rear of the house, where it appeared that the fire and smoke were heaviest. Smoke was pumping out of the rear door and windows and officers could see the stove in the kitchen was engulfed in flames.
The officers used portable fire extinguishers to put out the flames on the stove, but the fire re-ignited on the wall behind the stove. They used another fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
Firefighters from the West Windsor and Princeton Junction volunteer fire companies arrived and determined that the fire had been fully extinguished. They removed the stove and the damaged wallboard from the house.
The firefighters used fans to pull the smoke out of the house, which suffered smoke damage throughout, police said.
The cause of the fire, which does not appear to be suspicious, is under investigation by the West Windsor Division of Fire & Emergency Services.
