Saint Joseph skates past Notre Dame in Egan Cup

Offensive production came in many different ways for the Saint Joseph Regional High School ice hockey team in its Egan Cup series battle against Notre Dame High School on Dec. 23 at The Lawrenceville School’s Loucks Ice Center.

Six players recorded at least one goal to help the Metuchen school score a season-high seven goals to improve to 5-2 on the season with a 7-2 victory over Notre Dame.

“The rivalry we have with Notre Dame goes back years and it’s always a tough game,” said Saint Joseph coach Ryan Carter. “We capitalized a lot on our power play opportunities. The guys shared and moved the puck well. We’re peaking at the right time here early on in the season and getting our special teams to go the way we want.”

The two squads traded goals to start the contest, before the Falcons scored two goals in 30 seconds midway through the first period to take a 3-1 lead into the second period against the school from Lawrenceville.

Freshman Christian Cuccio scored a backhanded goal for the only score of the second period to make it a three-goal lead for the Falcons. The Metuchen school racked up three more goals in the third period to seal its second straight victory.

Junior Chris Ciccarello knocked home a game-high two goals in the victory for the Falcons.

Sophomore Ivan Borisov recorded his team-high sixth goal of the season with an assist in the victory.

Borisov dished off a beautiful pass from behind the net to set up Ciccarello’s one-timer with 0.2 second left to play, helping the junior hit on his third goal of the season.

Sophomore Will Celli and senior Josh Neville each scored a goal in the contest for Notre Dame, which fell to 5-2-1 on the season with the loss.
