East Brunswick Boy Scout Troop 223 honored Omar Kahn for renovating an area at the YMCA in East Brunswick.
Jersey Blue Chapter Regent Susan Luczu, of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), presented a Youth Citizenship Certificate Award and pin to Omar, in recognition of his scouting accomplishments and attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, according to information presented by NSDAR. The Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony was held at East Brunswick VFW Post 133 on Jan. 19.
Omar completed his service project at the Raritan Valley YMCA, serving as the project manager for the planning, layout and installation a flag pole and two new benches for seating in the area.
Omar was presented with the NSDAR Challenge Coin. The challenge coin tradition was introduced as early as the Roman Empire, who rewarded soldiers by presenting them with coins to recognize their achievements. More currently, during World War I and World War II, challenge coins were used by American volunteers and military pilots to confirm their identity when downed in enemy territory, or behind Allied lines without proper identification, according to the statement. Omar was presented these awards by DAR to always remind him of his extraordinary accomplishment and the high ideals that Scouting represent.
Omar is a student at East Brunswick High School, and plans to continue his education at John Hopkins University in the fall.
