There was no slowing down the Jackson Memorial High School girls’ basketball team on Feb. 8.
On that Saturday afternoon, Jackson Memorial extended its winning streak to 12 games with its 89-70 victory against Howell High School in Howell.
Led by senior Kristina Donza and junior Rachel Capua, the Jaguars rolled to a season-high 89 points against the Rebels to improve to 17-2 on the season.
“We take things one game at a time, one practice at time,” said Jackson Memorial coach Rachel Goodale. “That’s our mentality. Offensively, these girls fight and found a way to get on a great run coming out of the half. I thought we did a good job in the second half and I was pumped up about that.”
Capua led the Jackson Memorial charge in the first half, starting the game with an impressive 12-point first quarter and went on to score 18 of her 31 points in the half.
Donza continued to shine as one of the Shore Conference’s top stars with an impressive 18-point second half performance, giving her a game-high 32 points in the victory.
The senior has scored over 30 points in two of the last three games and is averaging 27.1 points a contest this season.
Freshman Zoie Maffei gave Jackson Memorial three players in double figures, recording 11 points in the victory.
Both juniors Caitlin Gresko and Grace Leary had excellent showings to lead Howell, which fell to 10-9 on the season.
Gresko recorded a season-high 26 points, while Leary sank 13 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter to help Howell score a season-high 70 points in the contest.
