FREEHOLD – Concerts in The Studio, the listening room series that has attracted Grammy award winning artists and national touring acts to Freehold Borough, is celebrating its 15th year and 200th show.
On May 17, Concerts in The Studio will host a special performance with Signature Sounds recording artists The Birds of Chicago, according to a press release.
BoC are fronted by husband and wife team J.T. Nero and Allison Russell and their music was once described as “secular gospel.”
“We laugh about that now,” Nero said. “That may be the least sexy phrase in the history of recorded music, but we signed off on that for the big marketing push to the kids.
“So much of the art we cherish in the last couple centuries has been made out of the impulse to create something beautiful because it brings you closer to God.
“That basic energy is still in it, whatever name you want to put on that ecstasy. Secular gospel is actually the definition of rock ’n’ roll,” Nero said.
This will be BoC’s third trip to Concerts in The Studio and every performance has been steeped in insightful songwriting and stellar musicianship, according to the press release.
Since April 2005, husband and wife Elaine and Mark Costanzo have hosted intimate, limited seat performances in a converted photo studio on their Freehold Borough property.
Seeking out artists who do not normally play shows of this nature, the Costanzos have successfully curated a series that has attracted the who’s who of Americana. There is a potluck meal following each show and 100% of all proceeds from Concerts in The Studio shows go directly to the artists, according to the press release.
