FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – A man from Spain and a man from Argentina have been charged with burglary following an incident at a home in Freehold Township.
According to the Freehold Township Police Department, on Feb. 15 at 6:52 p.m., police received a call from a resident on Rillstone Court, off Georgia Road, regarding a burglary in progress.
The resident reported hearing the glass in a rear sliding door break and the sound of a man’s voice. The resident was able to flee the home and contact police. Police said that person was the only occupant of the home at the time of the incident.
Upon police arrival, officers observed a shattered rear sliding door and then quickly made entry into the home. Upon hearing noises and the sounds of banging furniture from the upstairs floor, the officers made contact with two male suspects, both of whom were arrested.
A preliminary investigation determined the resident was alone upstairs at the time of the incident. The resident heard a buzzing noise from the broken doorbell, followed shortly after by knocking on the rear sliding door.
The resident had muted a television and heard the glass from the rear sliding door being shattered. The resident was able leave the residence undetected and contacted police.
An investigation at the scene determined both suspects were in possession of backpacks and in possession of jewelry belonging to the resident, according to police.
The suspects were identified as a 35-year-old male from Spain and a 22-year-old male from Argentina. Police said neither man had a fixed address.
Each suspect was charged with burglary, theft, possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief. The two men were initially placed in the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township.
The investigation is being handled by Officer Dylan Coladonato and Detective James Burdge, according to police.
