The five-member Hightstown High School team narrowly defeated Nottingham High School in the final of Mercer County’s seven-team matchup in the Mercer County Consumer Bowl contest at the Stone Terrace in Hamilton Township.
The Central Jersey Regional Consumer Bowl championship will be held in April in Monmouth County. Hightstown High School won the Central Jersey Regional Consumer Bowl and the New Jersey Consumer Bowl championships in 2017.
The Mercer County Consumer Bowl pits high school teams against one another in a quiz-show style competition that tests team members on good consumer practices. It is sponsored by the Mercer County Division of Consumer Affairs, in conjunction with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
The other high schools that sent teams to the Mercer County Consumer Bowl were Ewing High School, Hamilton High School West, Hopewell Valley Central High School, Lawrence High School and Steinert High School.
Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes congratulated Hightstown High School Consumer Bowl team members Aayusha Gupta, Maanas Manoj, Curtis McCleish, Sonit Puri and Rithesh Rajasekar, and their adviser, teacher David Teleposky.
“I applaud all the students for their desire to become more aware of the world around them. Being an informed consumer helps you understand your rights and become an active participant in the buying process,” Hughes said.
“Education is your best defense against consumer fraud,” Hughes said.
The Consumer Bowl was created by the Mercer County Division of Consumer Affairs in 1994 to encourage students to become smarter consumers, and to be wary of scams and unfair business practices.
The Consumer Bowl also encourages students to become more knowledgeable when obtaining home services such home improvements, or buying products such as vehicles and appliances.
