Cheers to Miss Virginia
for making the grade. Inspiring, timely and based on a true story, this indie flick (now streaming on Netflix) deserves to be in a class by itself thanks to an emotional, award-caliber turn by Orange Is the New Black‘s Uzo Aduba, who stars as a Washington, D.C., mom determined to fight the system and score her son a better education.
Jeers to RuPaul’s Drag Race
for sashaying away to Showtime. Instead of airing on VH1, where the current season is running, RuPaul’s summer edition of All Stars is set to run on the paid-cable net, meaning fans who don’t subscribe will have to cough up some extra cash to catch the Race.
Jeers to The Good Doctor
for its not-great romantic side. When ABC’s medical drama is focusing on crazy cases and hospital crises, it’s the best. But all of this soapy stuff with Sean (Freddie Highmore) and his uninterested ex Lea (Paige Spara) is turning the show into a paler shade of Grey’s.
Cheers to Devs
for not leaving us out in the code. Instead of piling on the techno-babble, the dazzling cyberthriller set within a Google-like empire has us hooked with its ominous tone and a first-rate ensemble led by Sonoya Mizuno and a terrifying Nick Offerman (above right, with Mizuno).
