Princeton firefighter diagnosed with COVID-19

A Princeton Fire Department firefighter has tested positive for COVID-19, the Princeton Health Department announced April 16.

The firefighter, who is one of the town’s six paid firefighters, began displaying symptoms on April 12 and took steps to go into quarantine, officials said.

The firefighter, who did not have contact with the public while he was infectious, has not been hospitalized and is showing mild symptoms of the disease, officials said.

The Princeton Fire Department developed a continuity of operations plan over the last several weeks and implemented it when the firefighter became ill, officials said.

The Princeton Fire Department’s six paid firefighters are organized into two-man crews that work a 24-hour shift and then are off for 48 hours. The fire department transitioned into a combination of paid and volunteer firefighters earlier this year, officials said.

The firefighter who worked on the same shift as the firefighter who became ill is now in quarantine and is monitoring himself for symptoms of COVID-19, officials said.

Two Princeton police officers and a per-diem emergency medical technician with the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad tested positive for COVID-19 last month on separate dates.
