NAMI NJ (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will hold a virtual support group through NAMI Family & Friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on May 12 to inform people who have loved ones with a mental health condition how to best support them.
It is also an opportunity to meet other people in similar situations and gain community support.
Led by trained people with lived experience of supporting a family member with a mental health condition, the seminar includes topics such as understanding diagnoses, treatment and recovery; effective communication strategies; the importance of self-care; crisis preparation strategies; and NAMI and community resources.
Participants will receive a free e-book after the presentation.
NAMI NJ Hearts & Minds is a program focused on inner and outer wellness. It will take place at 11 a.m. on May 17.
Program coordinator Elena Kravitz, certified psychiatric rehabilitation practitioner, will present on Psychiatric Advanced Directives (PAD), touching on PAD with overall wellness and recovery planning; PAD law and optional forms in New Jersey; options for registering and updating your PAD; discussing your PAD with family, natural supports, professionals, your proxy, and the role of these individuals in planning and enforcing it; and dealing with challenges and tools to use to have your PAD honored.
NAMI In Our Own Voice, planned for 3:30 p.m. on May 17, is a program to raise mental health awareness and reduce stigma. Learn from trained NAMI volunteers about their lived experience of mental health recovery: What happened, what helps, and what’s next.
