UPPER FREEHOLD – Four new per diem firefighters have been hired by the Township Committee in Upper Freehold Township to work for the Hope Fire Company.
The Hope Fire Company, which is based in the township, serves Upper Freehold and Allentown.
During a recent Township Committee meeting, members of the governing body hired Tyler Gallagher, Nicholas Brown, Michael Ott and Jonathan Caruso as on-call, per diem firefighters.
Each firefighter will receive a per diem salary based on a rate of $16 per hour, according to a resolution approving the hires.
Municipal officials said per diem firefighters are needed to fill in for department personnel during vacation days and sick days, and under other circumstances that may arise and prevent department personnel from fulfilling their duties.
The new firefighters’ salaries are covered in Upper Freehold’s 2020 municipal budget.
In other business, committee members acknowledged the resignation of Kenneth Niwore, who was a full-time firefighter driver with the Hope Fire Company. Niwore was hired as a full-time firefighter and driver in January 2009. His final day of work was April 10.
