After voluntarily closing its aquatic facilities on March 16 ahead of state mandates surrounding the spread of COVID-19, Greater Somerset County YMCA’s branches in Basking Ridge, Hillsborough and Somerville reopened pools for lap swimming today, July 8.
The reopening was conducted under the guidance of state and local health authorities.
“The Y has been helping local communities since 1873, during which we have made it through many challenging times together, none perhaps as impactful as the COVID-19 crisis,” said David M. Carcieri, president and CEO of Greater Somerset County YMCA, in a statement provided by the Y. “We are thrilled to be able to safely reopen our pools, welcome back our members, and get back to what we do best – helping everyone reach their full potential.”
In preparation for the pools’ reopenings, Greater Somerset County YMCA has been following guidelines from health experts and local officials to ensure all components of aquatic facilities are cleaned and sanitized to meet the highest standards for hygiene and safety. The Y has also modified policies and programs to facilitate safe social/physical distancing practices.
Per state mandates, each pool is limited to 25 percent capacity, with one swimmer per lane. Only adult lap swimming for members is available at this time. Y members who would like to use the pool for lap swimming must make an appointment on the Y’s website.
The Y is awaiting final approval from local officials to reopen the pool at its branch in Bridgewater, according to the statement. At all Greater Somerset County YMCA branches, capacity, distancing and cleaning requirements prevent other aquatic programs from relaunching at this time. These include aqua exercise, youth swim, family swim and swim lessons.
As Gov. Phil Murphy’s Executive Order No. 104 remains active, the Y awaits any announcement permitting its indoor Wellness Centers to reopen. The Y’s leadership teams remain in contact with state and local officials to keep members and the community informed of all reopening plans.
