METUCHEN – A Toms River man pleaded guilty to knowingly leaving the scene after fatally striking a utility worker performing road survey work on March 2 at the intersection of Middlesex Avenue and Grove Street, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.
Under a plea agreement reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Abrams, Paddy Flynn, 18, will be sentenced to a prison term of three years for causing the death of Michael Bergamasco, 51, of Whippany, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Flynn pleaded guilty on July 14 to a second degree charge of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and a third degree charge for causing death by driving without a license, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Flynn was arrested and charged as a result of an investigation by Sgt. Robert Belluscio of the Metuchen Police Department, and Detective Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation determined that at approximately 9:01 a.m. on March 2, Flynn was driving a white Ford F 250 pickup truck and struck Bergamasco in the crosswalk at the intersection of Middlesex and Grove avenues. He then fled the scene. The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and later died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Flynn is scheduled to be sentenced in New Brunswick Superior Court by Superior Court Judge Joseph A. Paone on Sept. 8.
