Hillsborough recognizes National Suicide Awareness Month

Hillsborough’s Township Committee members recognized September as National Suicide Awareness Month on Sept. 8.

The month-long initiative is known through the United States and helps raise awareness that prevention is possible, treatment is effective and people do recover.

“In these challenging times, messages of hope and healing are needed now more than ever. The Township Committee vows to continue to support suicide awareness programs dedicated to helping our community,” Mayor Doug Tomson said in a prepared statement.

Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race, orientation, income level, religion, or background. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death of among adults in the US, and the 2nd leading cause of death among people ages 10-34, and is one of the most tragic events a family and community can experience, according to the statement.

The goal of BORO SAFE is to raise community awareness that suicide is preventable, according to the statement. Residents are encouraged to educate themselves of the warning signs of suicide, understand suicide is preventable, and that there are resources available.

If anyone is in crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255).
