OLD BRIDGE – Old Bridge police officers bagged groceries at ShopRite in support of National Hunger Action Month.
September is National Hunger Action Month, a time when organizations and businesses across the country do their part to help fight hunger in their communities.
On Sept. 20, ShopRite of Old Bridge on Route 9, along with members of Old Bridge PBA Local No. 127, led the charge by hosting a “Help Bag Hunger Day,” according to a social media post by the Old Bridge PBA.
Throughout the morning, cashiers asked customers to donate $1, $3 or $5 at the register to help fill the shelves of local food banks. Police officers Pat Donofrio and Vinny Galgano, who is the president of the PBA, assisted with bagging groceries for the customers.
They also gave away T-shirts to those who made monetary donations for the food banks.
“Through these efforts, we helped ShopRite Partners In Caring, which is their year-round, community-based initiative, to provide funds to help feed the hungry and raises awareness of the issue of hunger,” Galgano said. “Old Bridge PBA Local 127 will continue to work closely with our community food bank and make sure they have ample resources to feed those families in need.”

Two bins are set up outside at the municipal building at 1 Old Bridge Plaza for non-perishable food donations for collections on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Monetary donations in the form of checks can be mailed to Old Bridge Food Bank, 1 Old Bridge Food Bank.
