South Brunswick Police Department invites public comment as part of reaccreditation assessment

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The South Brunswick Police Department (SBPD) is seeking to renew its national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).

National assessors will be conducting an independent audit that will examine more than 484 standards of policies, procedures, management, operations and support services of the SBPD.

“CALEA accreditation is the highest level of recognition of law enforcement excellence. SBPD first received CALEA accreditation in 2014 and was reaccredited in 2017,” Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a prepared statement.Accreditation is an ongoing process that requires us to examine our procedures and operations on a regular basis. Every four years an inspection is conducted to verify that the department continues to meet the commission’s state-of-the-art standards. Excellence is only achieved through constant pursuit of improvement. This process allows us to continue that pursuit.”

SBPD is one of only eight municipal law enforcement agencies in New Jersey currently accredited by CALEA.

Police invite the community to provide input during a virtual public information session hosted by CALEA from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 27. To participate, contact South Brunswick Police Lt. Mike LaPoint at for access information.

Those who are unable to attend the session can provide comments by phone from 1-2 p.m. Oct. 27 by calling 732-329-4000, ext. 7476. Comments are limited to five minutes and must address CALEA’s standards. A copy of CALEA’s standards is available at the SBPD.

CALEA has assigned an assessment team for SBPD’s reaccreditation, which will be led by Kenneth Gregory, deputy chief of the St. Louis County Police Department in Missouri, and Teresa Biffle, a captain with the Greensboro Police Department in North Carolina. Both serve similar out-of-state agencies. They will review written materials and interview individuals to verify the SBPD meets CALEA’s standards for reaccreditation. Based on their input, CALEA will determine if SBPD will be reaccredited for another four years.
