Matawan resident recognized by American Women Artists

MATAWAN – An artist who resides in Matawan has been recognized by American Women Artists (AWA).

The organization recently held a virtual awards ceremony for its national online exhibition “Lifting the Sky: Elevating the Works of American Women Artists,” according to a press release.

More than $34,000 in cash and merchandise prizes were awarded to 21 artists. Nanette Fluhr of Matawan won the Distinguished Portrait and Figure Award for her oil painting “Manu,” according to the press release.

The juror, Emily Larsen, said of Fluhr’s work, “The artistry of this painting is amazing. The artist’s ability to show the delicate nuances such as the sheer on the satin and skin. It’s just incredible.”

The juried show features 151 paintings and sculptures that were selected from more than 2,200 works by members of the AWA from across the United States and Canada.

With more than two decades of professional experience, Fluhr has created portraits that hang in public and private collections worldwide, according to the press release.

She has received honors and awards from institutions such as the Art Renewal Center, the Artist’s Magazine, the Portrait Society of America and the School of Visual Arts.

Fluhr’s work has been featured across the United States and Europe, and in a six-museum exhibit on contemporary American realism in China. Her work is currently on view at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain, according to the press release.

Since its inception, the AWA has worked to bring women artists to the attention of the art world through museum shows, juried competitions in galleries and museums around the country, symposiums and workshops, according to the press release.

The organization’s goal is to increase the number of professional opportunities for women in the visual fine arts that lead to greater inclusion.
