EAST BRUNSWICK–The Township Council adopted a $1 million bond ordinance to fund various water utility improvements within the municipality.
Before the ordinance was adopted, Councilman Dinesh Behal asked Township Attorney Michael Baker to explain the bond ordinance and what it will help fund.
“The bond ordinance [will fund] two significant water main replacement projects that are the replacement of very old 12-inch water mains. The first one is an Old Main Street, along the East Brunswick-Sayreville border, and the other is in Lawrence Brook Whitehall between Sullivan [Way] and Gage [Road], which is a very busy road,” Baker said. “Most of the money is for the 12-inch water main pipe itself, and the second most expensive or almost equally expensive is the excavation, milling and then repaving of those streets.”
The various improvements to the water utility will include:
- A water main upgrade on Whitehall Road to a 12-inch pipe to increase fire flow and enhance water quality and provide improved service to the adjacent streets in the Lawrence Brook area.
- Replacement of the existing four-inch cast iron water main on Main Street on the Old Bridge Turnpike to Sayreville border with a 12-inch pipe to increase fir flow in the area, promote water quality, help stabilize water pressure in the neighborhood and provide appropriately sized piping for future emergency interconnects with both Sayreville via Main Street and the Township of Old Bridge via Emerson Street to Old Matawan Road.
- Painting and treatment improvements of water lines that will also include engineering and design work, surveying, construction planning, preparation of plans, permits, bid documents, construction inspection, and labor.
The council approved and adopted the $1 million bond ordinance to fund various water utility improvements throughout the township on July 26 during the council meeting.
No down payment is required as the purpose authorized for the township Water Utility is deemed self-liquidating and the bonds are deductible from the gross debt of the township, according to the council.
This bond ordinance will take effect 20 days after the first publication and after final adoption, as provided by the Local Bond Law, according to the council.
