SAYREVILLE – Republicans Eunice Dwumfour and Christian Onuoha have seemingly won their first three-year terms on the Borough Council in Sayreville, creating a party split on the governing body.
The terms will run from January 2022 through December 2024.
According to the results posted online by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office as of press time on Nov. 11, Onuoha received 5,597 votes and Dwumfour received 5,548 votes in the Nov. 2 election.
Incumbent Democratic Councilmen Kevin Dalina and Damon Enriquez received 5,326 and 5,285 votes, respectively, according to the clerk’s office. Their terms will end in December.
There were 15 write-in votes tallied.
The results are unofficial until certified by the county.
“Like you, Sayreville is my home,” Dwumfour said of her candidacy. “I love and cherish this town and it is my desire to help improve the lives of its residents. In the past few years, we have seen many changes, including a worldwide pandemic, but despite all, Sayreville still stands strong because of residents like you.
“I am fully dedicated to building a better, stronger Sayreville, and with your support, we can create a brighter future for our wonderful town,” she said.
On his candidacy, Onuoha said, “Today, we have seen and overcome a global pandemic. It is time to get back to work and school and build our future. Together, I believe we can lead a better way forward for our borough.”
The election marks the first Republican sweep of both Borough Council seats in Sayreville since 2009.
Democrats currently hold a 5-1 majority on the Borough Council. With the victories of Dwumfour and Onuoha, there will be a 3-3 split between Democrats and Republicans when they take office at the annual reorganization meeting in January.
The mayor’s office is held by Democrat Victoria Kilpatrick.
“Ten thousand votes strong, Republican candidates Eunice Dwumfour and Christian Onuoha take both council seats in Tuesday’s election,” the local Republican Party wrote in an online statement. “Eunice and Christian are eager to get to work for Sayreville’s bright future.”
