OLD BRIDGE – A 17-year-old student pilot was attempting to land a single engine Cessna Skyhawk plane when it skidded off the runway and engulfed in flames at the Old Bridge Airport, according to Acting Chief Joseph P. Mandola, Jr.
The incident occurred at 4:46 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the airport on Pension Road.
The student pilot, who was the only person in the plane, was able to walk out of the plane before the plane was engulfed in flames, Mandola said.
The student pilot was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Mandola said the teenager was checked out and had non-life threatening injuries of bumps, bruises and scrapes.
The Old Bridge Police Department, South Old Bridge Fire Department, Old Bridge Office of Emergency Management, Middlesex County Hazmat, and the New Jersey State Police responded to the incident.
Mandola said all evidence and photos collected from the scene were given to the Federal Aviation Administration.
