A 64-year-old West Windsor Township man was killed when he was struck by a car as he was crossing Route 1 north at The Square at West Windsor shopping center on Dec. 5, according to the West Windsor Police Department.
Ang K. Sherpa had just walked across the deceleration lane that leads into the shopping center, which is anchored by Lowe’s and Trader Joe’s, on Route 1 north and was starting to cross the right lane of travel when the incident occurred at 6:22 a.m., police said.
As the man stepped into the right lane, he was struck by a 2015 Nissan Altima being driven by a 31-year-old female resident of Plainsboro. The woman was traveling in the right lane when the man walked into the direct path of her car, police said.
After the woman struck the man, she drove onto the shoulder of the highway and stopped, police said. The man was embedded in the car’s windshield and front passenger compartment, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
All lanes on Route 1 north were closed between Quakerbridge Road and Meadow Road for more than three hours during the investigation, which was led by the West Windsor Police Department.
The West Windsor Division of Fire and Emergency Services, Capital Health paramedics and the Princeton Junction and West Windsor volunteer fire companies also responded to the scene.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office’s Serious Collision Response Team, the New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded.
