EDISON – Edison police lose one of their own before the holidays.
Detective Sgt. Jeffrey P. Tierney passed away on Dec. 19. He was 52.
“[He] was a devoted husband, father and son, who served the Edison Police Department and the citizens of Edison Township for over 21 years,” Police Chief Thomas Bryan said. “He was one of our most conscientious and successful detectives. Sgt. Tierney was held in very high regard by his peers and many other law enforcement officers from throughout the state of New Jersey. Sgt. Tierney was not only one of the most professional, but nicest and compassionate individuals I have ever known. He would go out of his way to help anyone. Everyone will miss Jeff’s smile and larger than life personality.”
Tierney was hired by the Edison Police Department on July 29, 2000. He was well known for his strong work ethic, his willingness to always help a fellow police officer or stranger along with his positive attitude, according to the department’s social media page.
Tierney is survived by his wife Jennifer M. Tierney (Reichle); his children, Kyle James and Lyla Jane; and his mother MaryJane Tierney of Edison.
Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Dec. 27 at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home in Metuchen. A funeral service will be held later that evening at 6 p.m. on Dec. 27 at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home.
The family respectfully requests that masks be worn for the duration of the visitation and service.
