Freehold Township Police Department Detective Lt. Joseph Winowski has announced that law enforcement officials from Freehold Township will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs as part of the annual end of summer “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide campaign.
The campaign began on Aug. 19 and will continue through Sept. 5. During that time, local and state law enforcement officers will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated, according to Winowski.
The national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” effort endeavors to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high visibility enforcement and public education.
Last year, 23% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were alcohol-related. Nationally, 11,654 people died in 2020 in drunk driving crashes. The societal cost associated with these crashes is estimated to be $44 billion annually, according to information provided by Winowski.
A shared services agreement that involves police departments in Western Monmouth County and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office has been amended to include an eighth police department.
On Aug. 17, members of the Township Committee in Freehold Township passed a resolution revising the renewal of the shared services agreement for the Western Monmouth Active Shooter Training Group. Freehold Township is the lead agency and provider in the agreement.
When the agreement was renewed in June, the Englishtown Police Department, which had previously been a participant, did not rejoin the agreement. According to the Aug. 17 resolution, Englishtown representatives subsequently decided to rejoin the group.
The Freehold Township Police Department is joined in the agreement by the police departments from Freehold Borough, Manalapan, Howell, Colts Neck, Allentown, Marlboro and Englishtown, and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department.
The agreement is effective from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, after which it may be renewed by the participants.
The agreement allows for interagency standardization of active shooter response protocols and facilitating a rapid response and coordination in the event that officers from multiple agencies may be the first responders in neighboring communities for these types of incidents. This will be the fifth year the training group will be in effect.
