Superintendent of Schools Ross Kasun plans to retire from the Lawrence Township Public Schools, effective Sept. 1.
Kasun announced his plan to retire in a May 15 letter sent to the Lawrence Township Public Schools community. He has served as the superintendent of schools since 2018.
“After years of serving as your superintendent, I have decided to begin a new chapter in my life. I have been offered a position as a product development specialist for an educational technology firm,” Kasun wrote.
In his new job, Kasun wrote, he will work with a team to create unique learning opportunities for students using virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. It is in line with his previous experience in using technology to encourage personalized learning.
“Working alongside such talented, dedicated professionals (in the school district) has been a privilege and an honor. Together, we have accomplished so much – improving student outcomes, expanding programs and services, and building a culture of excellence,” he wrote.
“I leave knowing that the district is in good hands, and with a committed and talented leadership team and staff who are dedicated to our students and their success,” Kasun wrote.
The school board, in the meantime, has already begun discussions about the process to select a new superintendent, he wrote. The goal is to have a new superintendent in place by September.
Kasun came to the Lawrence Township Public Schools in September 2018 from the Freehold Township school district, where he had served as its superintendent of schools. He replaced former Lawrence Superintendent of Schools Crystal Edwards.
Kasun began his career in education as an elementary school teacher. He was a school principal in the South Orange-Maplewood and Millburn school districts.
He had been the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Summit public school district. He was the superintendent of schools in the Colts Neck school district prior to becoming the superintendent of schools in the Freehold Township.
Kasun has received numerous honors and recognitions over the years, including being named Superintendent of the Year by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators.
Kasun earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Seton Hall University. After working for two international corporations in finance, he switched careers to become an educator.
He earned a master’s degree in elementary education and a doctorate in educational administration and supervision, both from Seton Hall University. He also earned a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Rutgers University.
