HOWELL — The Blue Moon Kruizers have kicked off their 10th season of Saturday cruise-in nights that feature classic cars and fun for the family.
The Blue Moon Kruizers classic car club will host its next cruise-in from 5-8 p.m. April 18 at Chick-fil-A, 4881 Route 9 North, Howell. All members of the community are welcome to attend the festivities.
Subsequent cruise-in events will be held on the first and third Saturdays of every month leading up to the club’s Halloween car show on Oct. 17. There is no registration fee to show a classic car.
The car club started 10 years ago, according to President John Lebrio.
“The club started out with 27 members and went down to 17 as our members came and went over the years and retired to different places in the country. We are still going strong,” Lebrio said.
The Blue Moon Kruizers got their start with between 10 and 15 cars attending each cruise-in. Over time, the turnout grew to almost 200 classic cars attending each event, according to Lebrio.
“We started this club with my son and his friend who was a DJ. My son is a cruiser himself, so the cruises started before the club officially began. We all helped out along the way, which developed into the club being started,” he said.
The Blue Moon Kruizers’ annual “Wheels for Meals” car show will support the Howell Food Pantry. The event will be held at the Chick-fil-A in Howell from 4-9 p.m. June 20.
“We have adopted the food pantry again this year as our go-to [organization] for our donations and have made $50,000 in donations in the past nine years,” Lebrio said.
At the “Wheels for Meals” event, door prizes and goodie bags will be given out to the first 75 people in attendance and 100 trophies will be awarded to classic car enthusiasts, including Best in Show, Best of Classic Cars and Best of New Cars, according to Lebrio.
The final event of the season will be a Halloween car show featuring decorations on cars and children in costumes. In 2014, 134 vehicles came out to support the close of the season, according to the Kruizers’ website.
The Howell Rebelettes from Howell High School and the a capella group The Coachliners will both be back for the 2015 season to provide live musical entertainment.
Music by the band The Castoffs will be featured at the “Wheels for Meals” show in June.
“We also provide activities for the kids, like a hula hoop contest and a fan belt toss where kids have a chance to win prizes,” Lebrio said. “We are still doing our regular cruise-ins and car shows and we always have a phenomenal turnout, especially on nice days. The event is fun and very family oriented.”
