JOSEPH YOUNG JR., 74, of Kerrville, Texas, died Jan. 28 at Hilltop Village Nursing Home in Kerrville after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Newark and resided for many years in Keyport, Middletown and Brick before retiring to Texas. He worked for Gold Cooperage in Newark and was the first mate on the Atlantic Highlands party boats Happy, Vanguard, Super Cat, Sea Fox and others for many years. Joe is survived by Audrey, his wife of 45 years, and their three children, Jody R. Young of Wellington, Fla., Tracy L. Biedeger, M.D. of Boerne, Texas, and Timothy S. Young of Easton, Md., their spouses, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by two daughters from his first marriage, Mary Alice Young of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Betty Ann Capote of Savannah, Ga., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters, Rose of Florida, and Evelyn and Mary in New Jersey. Memorial donations may be made to Peterson Hospice in Kerrville.
MANDEL LAMHUT, 82, of Freehold Township died Jan. 28 at Bartley Manor, Jackson Township. He was born in New York City and lived in Freehold for the last 49 years. He was president of Paul Mark Printing, operating in Freehold since 1964. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and was in the U.S. Army Reserve for 18 years. He was a member and past commander of Oglensky Jackson Post. No. 359, Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America, Freehold, county commander of the Jewish War Veterans, a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 4373, Freehold, and Battleground Centennial Lodge No. 100, Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Ashpitz Lamhut; three sons, Paul of Brick Township, and Mark and Howard, both of Freehold; two daughters, Carol Lamhut, Brick, and Elfriede Lamhut, Freehold; a brother, Morris Lamhut, Savannah, Ga.; and two grandchildren. Interment was at Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick, 08902.
GERTRUDE M. HAYDEN BOWIE, 80, of the Melrose section of Sayreville died Jan. 25 in Holmdel Convalescent Center. Her husband, Ennis Bowie, died in 1980. Surviving are three daughters, Kathleen Crowley of Manalapan, Eugenia Kellett of Sayreville and Jane Bowie of Melrose; two brothers, James Hayden of Brick and Ronald Hayden of Middletown; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Mary’s Church, South Amboy. Interment was in New Calvary Cemetery, Sayreville.
