The Competition Cheerleading teams of Monsignor Donovan High School recently returned from a very successful trip to the Contest of Champions held in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 25.

Both the junior varsity and the varsity teams took first place in their divisions. The varsity team also had the distinction of being crowned Grand Champions by achieving the highest score of the 100 other teams that competed. This is the second year in a row that the MDHS varsity team has been awarded this distinction.

The freshmen stunt group of Danielle Marra, Katrina Straniero and Ashley Ingraham, all of Brick, Nikki Kalinowski, of Forked River, and Jenna McRae, of Howell, finished in first place; and the senior stunt group of Kathryn Popp and Ally Wells, of Brick, Vicki Greeves and Noel Aliseo, of Toms River, and Kelly Daly, of Howell, finished in third place.

Christie Congilose of Toms River was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for her first place individual performance and Victoria D’Anton and Maria Lipnick, both of Toms River, earned $500 scholarships for second and third places, respectively. Tiffany Haupt of Brick was awarded a $250 scholarship for her fifth-place finish. Freshman Arielle Corrubia of Brick placed second in the ninth-grade individual category.

In addition, the MDHS cheerleaders were awarded the Spirit of Disney Award in recognition of the true sportsmanship they demonstrated throughout the competition.
