Nearly 20 years ago, three coaches from the Shore area had tossed around an idea of starting up a local basketball camp. At that time, there were very few organized sporting camps around the immediate area. Now, the RKE Hart’s AC Basketball Camp is one of the longest running camps in Ocean County. The camp’s success is due largely in part to the hard work and dedication of the camp directors and their staff.

The camp’s directors include: Ron Krayl,a longtime Monmouth University assistant coach; Tom Handwerk, who coached on the Division I college levels for both men’s and women’s programs and helped guide championship teams at Lakewood and Point Pleasant Boro; and John Stephens, former head basketball coach at Point Pleasant Boro.

This year’s camp dates are set for June 27-July 1. The boys camp will run from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Grades 2, 3, and 4 will be held at Ocean Road Elementary School and grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 will be held at Memorial Middle School.

The entire girl’s camp will run from 1 pm-5 p.m. at the Ocean Road Elementary School. Campers will receive instruction, lectures and demonstrations by the Basketball Camp Staff. Players will receive individual instruction to help their particular needs. Instruction on defense will be emphasized as well as shooting techniques. Everyone will participate in games on a daily basis.

The girls of the Brick Shorestars basketball organization U12 team, under the leadership of head coach Don Warn, performed flawlessly and took first place in the Mountain B-Ball Jamfest in Pocono Summit, Pa., on May 15. They advanced to the finals after resounding wins in the qualifying divisional games on May 14. The next day they faced up against another local team ironically that had advanced to the finals and defeated the N.J. Flames in a hard fought match-up.

This same group of girls went on this past weekend to perform in the first annual Beach Bash tournament in Point Pleasant and Toms River. Here they continued their winning ways by going 5-0 for the tournament.

The players are Kristen Brown, Bethany Butka, Stephanie Fish, Chelsea Stanford, Jessica Ball, Meagan Byrne, Samantha Babo, Kayla Warn, Taylor Fish, Kaitlyn Stanford, Elyse Fish and Nicole Casey.

Warn is assissted by Vinny Butka and Wayne Ball.

Brick Memorial is accepting registration for its summer basketball camp for June 27-30 at the school. Ron Gerlufsen, who coached the Mustangs to an all-time best 18-8 record, a share of first place in Shore Conference A South and berths in the NJSIAA and Shore Conference tournaments, will head the camp instruction on all aspects of the game. Assistant coach Jason Bloom and players on the team will assist Gerlufsen.

“This camp has been a spawning ground for many of the players currently in the high school program,” Gerlufsen said.

The camp, which takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, costs $95.
