Deaf Awareness Day planned at OCC April 23

  • Ocean County College, Toms River, is proud to announce its second annual Deaf Awareness Day. Festivities will take place April 23, doors open at 9 a.m., and activities run throughout the day including an evening concert. The event is sponsored by OCC Interpreter Training Program (ITP) Sign Language Society. All of the events listed below are open to the public.
  • • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the OCC gymnasium -— various deaf vendors will be set up. Live entertainment will include performances by the Tailspinners, Manny Hernandez, Ken Glickman and Forum Theater. Free.

    • 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — The OCC Cafeteria will be open for people to purchase food.

    • 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. in the OCC gymnasium — ITP students will run classrooms with activities for children and teaching classrooms about American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture. Free.

    • 7 p.m., Fine Arts Theatre — Sign Language Concert presented by OCC ITP. Back by popular demand, students will perform to songs in ASL. Tickets: $12 adults, $8 children 12 and under.
