After opening the spring season with a tough 3-1 loss against Beachwood, the Allentown United U11 travel girls’ soccer team evened its record with a 3-1 victory over TRIC. The first half was controlled by the United. They had many scoring chances, but the TRIC goalie was always there. The United defense had very little work and no pressure from the TRIC forwards. Toward the end of the first half, when the United’s defense failed to clear the ball, a TRIC striker took the advantage and put the ball in the net for a 1-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the United came out hungry and got a quick goal from Ashley Perritt. As they continued to put pressure on TRIC’s defense, the United went ahead with a beautiful pass from Dawn Taylor to Carolyn Horner, who put the ball in the goal. United put the game away with a goal from Taylor. The defense was led by goalie Shannon Buckley, Meghan Valnoski, Brittany Hodul, Ashley Pereira, Samantha Myers, Angelique Calise and Katelyn Kretchmer. The midfield was led by Dawn Taylor, Shelby Doll, Brittany Worrall and Katie Mottola. The attack was led by Ashley Perritt, Carolyn Horner, Danielle Turner, Amanda Kyle and Brooke Kania. The United’s next home game is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against Jackson.
The Allentown United U12 boys’ travel soccer team played the Lakewood Lazers this past Saturday in its home-opener. Allentown came away with a well-deserved 1-0 victory, playing one of the best all-around soccer games it has ever played. A relentless attack and a superb display of team soccer resulted in the United’s third win of the season. The offense worked the ball efficiently and generated numerous scoring opportunities. Their efforts were finally rewarded as Mic Sowa blasted a high, hard shot past the Lakewood goalie with approximately three minutes left in the game. It was a rewarding victory against a very worthy opponent. The entire United squad played well and contributed to the victory, but special recognition must go out to the United’s defense which played superbly. Hayley Odell had the key assignment of the match as she marked the Lazers’ most dangerous player and thoroughly neutralized him. Danny Santos at sweeper played a flawless game and thwarted every Lazers attack, letting nothing get behind him. Danny Bailey and Bryan Pope, at the outside defender positions, played with energy and toughness and seemed to win every contested ball. Dean Search and Haley Wilhelm also deserve mention as they played a fine two-way game from their key midfield positions.
The United plays two home games this weekend, first against the Pinelands Dragons on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then against the Lakewood Wolfpac on Sunday at 3 p.m.
