Jackie Pilato and Andrew Ciesla, both of Brick, were among more than 545 students who participated in Syracuse (N.Y.) University’s Goon Squad in August as part of the university’s new-student orientation program, “Syracuse Welcome 2004: A Slice of SU Life.” Established in the 1940s by university students to spread school spirit and help incoming freshmen adjust to college life, the Goon Squad consists of volunteer upperclassmen who assist new students and their parents as they move into residence halls and attend events held throughout the program. Pilato is a junior in SU’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Ciesla is a sophomore in the university’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Steven Harney, of Brick, has been named a dean’s scholar at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., where he is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dean’s scholarships, which are awarded to entering first-year and transfer students, recognize outstanding academic achievement. In addition to having strong academic credentials in high school, candidates must be active in extracurricular and community activities and are also required to demonstrate good character and citizenship. Harney received the university’s George L. Krzyzak Scholarship.
Christopher Cannon, of Brick, has been named a chancellor’s scholar at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., where he is a public communications major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Chancellor’s scholarships, which are awarded to entering first-year and transfer students, recognize outstanding academic achievement. Candidates must have strong academic credentials in high school, be active in extracurricular and community activities, and demonstrate good character and citizenship.
Krista M. Stancati of Brick has been named to the dean’s list for the spring term at Loyola College in Maryland, Baltimore, where she attained a 4.0 grade-point average.
Rider University, Lawrenceville, N.J., has named the following students from Brick to the dean’s list for the spring semester: Sara Ball, Christine Hamershock, Lauren Havanki, Karen Kehm, Marisa Lyon, Kevin Morris and James Scott.
