TINTON FALLS — Monmouth County has acquired property in Colts Neck, Tinton Falls and Wall Township, and is seeking to add those parcels to the Solid Waste Management Plan.
According to county documents, as part of the process, the land may be used for future disposal capacity at the Monmouth County Reclamation Center, Tinton Falls, including access, remedial work, cover materials, wetlands mitigation, ancillary facilities and buffers.
Some of the land shows evidence of past waste disposal/disturbance associated with former land filling activities at the SDC Landfill, which closed in 1981, according to the documents.
In Colts Neck, the public comment period runs from June 8 through July 8, according to a letter dated June 8 from Monmouth County Solid Waste Coordinator Stuart Newman to Colts Neck Municipal Clerk Beth Kara.
However, the public comment period for Tinton Falls residents closed May 28.
The county’s Solid Waste Advisory Council may take action at its July 30 meeting, which will be held in the administration building at the reclamation center, 600 Asbury Ave., Tinton Falls.
According to the documents, approximately 93 acres in Colts Neck, 60 acres in Tinton Falls and 221 acres in Wall Township have been acquired by the county.
The Tinton Falls acreage is located adjacent to the reclamation center.
“In December 2013, Monmouth County completed the acquisition of property to the north of the Monmouth County Reclamation Center in Tinton Falls from WSCT Falls Corp.,” Richard Throckmorton, superintendent of the reclamation center, said in an April 29 letter to Newman.
The letter states there are blocks in Colts Neck and Tinton Falls that “remain a closed landfill known as the Shrewsbury Disposal Landfill.”
According to Monmouth County Public Information Officer Laura Kirkpatrick, the county acquired land adjacent to the reclamation center, but future plans for the properties have not been finalized.
Kirkpatrick said the county agreed to monitor the former landfill, which will not be reopened.
