First responders such as firefighters are essential to protecting the safety and well-being of their fellow citizens. Emergency responders often face dangerous situations that many people will never encounter, and many offer their services solely on a volunteer basis, which removes a tremendous financial burden from countless budgets across the state.
In an effort to encourage volunteerism and acknowledge the commitment made by these men and women, I have introduced A2953, a piece of legislation that would raise the maximum eligibility age for exempt fireman certificates and membership in the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association from 45 to 65 years of age. This certificate provides firefighters with death benefits under the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association.
Current state law requires firefighters to join the fire service between the ages of 18 and 45 in order to be eligible for an exempt fireman certificate. However, firefighters who join the service after the age of 45 are neither eligible for a certificate nor the accompanying death benefits.
I urge my colleagues in the Legislature to support A2953 to ensure equality among our state’s courageous volunteers.
Further, I plan on introducing a bill that would provide a tax credit to all volunteer first responders. The selflessness and sacrifices of firefighters, emergency medical technicians and other volunteers should be rewarded. A tax incentive is the best way for communities to show their appreciation for these dedicated men and women who risk their lives to protect others. Sean T. Kean State Assemblyman Wall Township
