Services held for Cream Ridge woman killed in Rt. 524 accident

UPPER FREEHOLD — Funeral services were held Monday at Allentown Presbyterian Church for Susan Pontoriero-Fiordland, 44, of Cream Ridge, who died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident at milepost 8.6 on Route 524 on Monday, Feb. 22.

New Jersey State Police said Pontoriero- Fiordland was ejected from her 2001 Lincoln Navigator after it collided with a dump truck and overturned.

Around 8:45 a.m., Pontoriero-Fiordland was driving west on the county road when she attempted to pass a Monmouth County Highway Department truck, which also was traveling west, state police said.

Michael Matullo, 29, of Lakewood, the driver of the International dump truck, was attempting to make a left turn into a driveway, state police said, when the right side of the Lincoln SUV hit the left front bumper of the dump truck. Pontoriero-Fiordland’s vehicle then left the road, striking a mailbox and overturning, state police said.

Pontoriero-Fiordland was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, state police said. She was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m.

Allentown First Aid Squad responded to the scene.

Pontoriero-Fiordland graduated from Allentown High School. She was a member of the Allentown Presbyterian Church and enjoyed gardening, according to her obituary. She was a loving mother whose life was devoted to her daughters.

Predeceased by her mother, Virginia P. Rines, she is survived by four daughters, AutumnNicole, Chloe Violet, Emily Louise and Krista Rose; her daughters’ father Kurt Fiordland; her father, Anthony Pontoriero of Cranbury; a brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Charlene Pontoriero of Fairview, Montana; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane and Gary Evert of Crosswicks, Patricia and K.C. Wolfe of Roosevelt, Colleen and Bryan Marszalek of Pilot, Va., and Debra and Ray Johnson of New Egypt; cousins Beverley Stevenson of Trenton and Judy Carroll of Hamilton, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held March 1 at the Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown; interment followed in Cream Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, P.O. Box 827790, Philadelphia, PA 19182.
