Belmar art exhibit seeks entries

The Belmar Arts Council (BAC) has issued a call for submissions to its “Art on the Edge” exhibition. The show is open to artists age 16 and older working in all media. This year’s jurors are Jenn Hampton and Sarah Potter of Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park.

Entries will be received 5-7 p.m. Aug. 19 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at The Boatworks, the BAC headquarters at 608 River Road, Belmar.

The “Art on the Edge” show is looking for contemporary images and objects that proudly display their origins outside the mainstream — the type of atypical artwork that brings the dark side to light, and a little light to the darkness. Call it lo-fi, no-fi, indie, goth, punk, pop surrealism, tattoo style, graffiti, street, alternative — BAC is calling it Art on the Edge.

The exhibition will be displayed Aug. 27 through Sept. 23, with an opening reception Aug. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m., and will feature live art demos and music by Dr. Void and the Death Machines.

Artists should note that all artwork must be original and not previously exhibited in a BAC show. Three pieces per artist may be entered.

Acceptance is not guaranteed. The entry fee is $15 per piece for nonmembers or $10 per piece for BAC members. Sales of work are encouraged, but not required. An entry form and complete details can be obtained online at www.BelmarArts.org.

The programs of the Belmar Arts Council are funded by dues, donations and grants. BAC’s events are made possible in part by the Monmouth County Arts Council through funding from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, through the County Historical Commission and the New Jersey Stats Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.
