John Clinton Doremus Jr.

Mr. Doremus, 79, of Rumson and Longboat Key, Fla., died July 17, 2011, at home. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957, where he attained the rank of captain. His 34-year Wall Street career was spent entirely with Smith Barney, which he joined as a trainee in 1957. Mr. Doremus was elected a member of the board of directors in 1970 and its holding company, Smith Barney Inc., in 1982. In 1983 he was elected executive vice president and in 1985 was elected vice chairman. Mr. Doremus was a member of the firm’s operating, planning and executive committees and retired as vice chairman in 1991. He was a director of N.J. Title Insurance Co., a founding member of Sarasota Bank, and a member of the Planning Board of Rumson for 19 years, retiring as chairman. Surviving are his wife, Ann; three daughters, Dawn A. Costa and her husband, Robert, of Fair Haven, Carrie D. Keating of Rumson, and Megg D. Demko and her husband, Joseph, of Windermere, Fla.; six grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Witalis; a nephew and a niece. A memorial gathering was held at the Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank.
