Happy Arbor Day!

How do you save money on your energy bills, increase the value of your house and fight global warming? Simple — plant a tree on your lawn! According to U.S. Department of Energy, as few as three trees properly positioned can save the average household between $100 and $250 annually in energy costs. Those same three trees can absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) at a rate of 144 pounds per year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support six human beings.

Now is a perfect time to plant trees, but there are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

• Do pick the right tree for the right place. Shade trees on the east and west sides of the house will keep it cooler in the summer months, while evergreens on the north side will keep out cold winter winds.

• Don’t start digging before calling 811. Calling 811 gets your underground utility lines marked for free and helps prevent undesired consequences.

• Do use mulch. It keeps the soil moist, prevents lawn mower damage and keeps out weeds.

• Don’t pile up the mulch against the trunk. Keep it six inches away from the trunk to avoid bark damage.

• Do thoroughly water the trees weekly the first two summers. If there is a nearby public tree (planted between the sidewalk and the curb), feel free to water it too.

• Don’t try to prune public trees yourself. Not only may you end up damaging the tree, but it is also illegal. If you see a problem, please report it to the Department of Public Utilities.

• Do enjoy your new tree!
