TINTON FALLS — The Borough Council approved an ordinance Feb. 17 establishing a Community Activities Committee.

According to Ordinance 09-1264, the borough has received numerous inquires from private citizens wanting to volunteer their time for community activities.

Councilman Duane Morrill proposed the formation of the new committee, which will have two main functions: to centralize and disseminate information on all community and civic opportunities for volunteer efforts; and to match volunteers with activities.

Director of Law James Berube explained at the council meeting that this would provide a potential method of raising private funds for civic activities and the opportunity for private partnerships.

The committee will have five members, including a Borough Council liaison and a borough representative, and four alternates. Three residents will be appointed by the mayor, as will the four alternates.

According to the ordinance, the Community Activities Committee is being created “for the purpose of enabling volunteers to assist with the dissemination of information and coordinate volunteer opportunities to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors to the Borough of Tinton Falls.”

The committee will serve only as an advisory committee, and its main function will be as a source to collect information on borough and community activities and to coordinate volunteer needs that are communicated to the

committee by different civic and community organizations.

“This will become a standing committee of the borough,” Berube said. “It will not incorporate, it will not assimilate any other committees in the borough that exist in agreement attached to the borough family or outside that run activities.

“It’s really only an advisory committee to the council, and a committee to collect and disseminate information as well as potentially soliciting donations for civic purposes,” Berube said.
