Phoenix Productions in Red Bank will hold auditions for the multicultural musical: “The Wiz” which will take place in July at the Count Basie Theatre on Monmouth Street. Characters include Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow, the Wiz, three witches who all sing, plus lots of actors who can sing and dance as well as children. All parts are open; a multi-cultural cast Audition will take place at the Phoenix Studio Theatre, 111 Monmouth St., next door to the Count Basie Theatre on Saturday, May 7, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., for children only, and Saturday, May 7, 2 -5 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, May 11, 7-9 p.m. for other parts.

Auditioners should prepare 16 bars and must have sheet music; an accompanist will be provided.

The Monmouth County Arts Council has announced the winners of the 2005 Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival . The two-day festival took place in March at Brookdale Community College with some 2,000 students from 23 schools participating. Artwork and performances were evaluated by professional artists. Performing arts winners include: large instrumental group, Monmouth Regional High School; small instrumental group, Pound, Long Branch High School; Red Bank Regional High School Chamber Ensemble; piano, Ali Weinberg, RBR; large vocal group, RBR Chamber Choir; small vocal, Matthew Krewl, Erin Barnett, both RBR; Grace Chung, MRHS; dance, Rashaad Kelly, LBHS; Red Bank High School Catholic Dance Group; Jamie Baptiste, RBR; large theater group, RBR Spoon River Anthology; large theater musical, Rashaad Kelly, Brenton Diallo, Amber Pennington and Ruth Adekunle, LBHS; literary arts, Meera Patel, Melissa Hochman, RBR.

Actress Adrienne Barbeau will star as Judy Garland in a Broadway-bound workshop of a new play by Billy Van Zandt. The exclusive, four-performance engagement previews June 2-5 at the Performing Arts Center of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft. “The Property Known as Garland” is a moving backstage account of the legendary singer’s final concert on March 25, 1969. The two-character play tells a deeply human tale of survival.

Directed by Glenn Casale, the play has been staged in workshop settings at West Coast venues and is slated for an official debut in New York next year. Advance reservations are recommended for the drama, which will be presented in the 125-seat black box Experimental Theatre. Performance dates are June 2, 3 and 4 at 8 p.m. and June 5 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $38 and $34 for BCC students & seniors, and are available by calling the box office at (732) 224-2411.
