ROOSEVELT — Closing out the year’s business last Thursday, the Borough Council approved a salary ordinance for a new part-time recreation director.
The newly created position of recreation director will be filled by Eric Schubiger, a Forked River resident who is also the recreation director in East Windsor.
He will be paid $10,000 per year, which will come out of grant money, Mayor Michael Hamilton said.
Hamilton added that Schubiger is a particularly good fit for Roosevelt and an extremely well-qualified candidate.
"It’s exciting to have a recreation director. He’s done a very good job in East Windsor. It will be an opportunity for our programs to dovetail," he said.
Under new business, the council also approved a resolution to award a contract for garbage, trash and recyclable collection services at $67,300 per annum, and passed a motion to approve Hendrickson Excavating for salting and sanding services. Hendrickson has been providing the service for many years, council members said.
It also took care of some financial business and discussed a Jan. 3 meeting among fire officials, council members and the state Occupational Safety and Health Advisory regarding a Department of Labor letter citing it for violations after an inspection of fire equipment in October.
Roosevelt’s end-of-year special meeting was attended by the two newly elected council members, Patricia Moser and Elly J. Shapiro, who will be sworn in New Year’s Day, along with Marilyn Magnes, who was elected to complete an unexpired term that will end Dec. 31, 2002.
Magnes has been on the council since March 12.
Hamilton thanked outgoing Councilman Harry Parker, who chose not to run for a second term.
"Harry devoted a lot of his life to public service. He has served on the Board of Education and the Planning Board," the mayor said.
The other outgoing councilman, John Towle, was not present.
