Mayor, council easily retain positions

SHREWSBURY — Mayor Emilia Siciliano and her two Borough Council running mates won election to new terms last week in uncontested races.

Siciliano, who was first elected mayor in November 1998, won a new four-year term with 876 votes.

Siciliano was initially appointed to the council to fill a vacancy in April 1968 and served until December 1973. She returned to the council in August 1994 when she was again appointed to a vacancy and served until elected mayor in 1998.

In the council election, Councilman John McGuire won re-election with 870 votes while Councilwoman Marlene Hotaling, who was appointed to the fill the vacancy created by Gerry Polling’s resignation, garnered 884 votes.

Siciliano, McGuire and Hotaling are all Republicans.

The non-binding question on increasing the county’s open space tax passed with 683 votes for it to 203 votes against.

A total of 1,261 voters cast ballots, which is 48.4 percent of the 2,603 registered voters in the borough.
