– Middlesex 4-H to hold open house Oct. 5

The Middlesex County 4-H Open House is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Oct. 5 at the 4-H Youth Center, 645 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.

There are more than 25 4-H clubs within Middlesex County. The clubs focus on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering and technology programs in addition to agriculture.

Attendees can learn about the clubs, meet 4-H members and volunteer leaders, enjoy petting zoos and demonstrations or join a 4-H club during the event.

– Brunch to support breast-cancer fight

The Pink & Bloom Foundation will host the fourth annual Brunch Against Breast Cancer for the Brave Bloom N’ Butterfly Warriors noon-3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Gusto Grill, 1050 Route 18, East Brunswick. The event is designed to raise awareness and funds in support of breast-cancer research and local breast-cancer patients and their families.

Brunch will feature food; unlimited Mimosas, Bloody Marys and Cosmos; basket raffles, a 50/50; and music. Staff members from Tuscana Salon, East Brunswick, will provide Pink Ribbon Services to all guests.

Donation is $50 at the door. All proceeds will go to the Pink & Bloom Foundation Inc.

Alecia Joy Bloom, founder and president of Pink & Bloom, is a 23-year cervical-cancer survivor and an 11-year breast-cancer survivor. She and her longtime friend, Tracy Stoessler, owner and operator of Tuscana Salon, have been partners and supporters of each other in the fight against breast cancer.

During October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Tuscana Salon, 42 Old Stage Road, will sell pink ribbons to remember, honor or support those who have been affected by breast cancer. Purchasers will have a chance to win a goodie basket.

– Church ‘conversations’ series begins Oct. 2

Christ Episcopal Church of South Amboy, 220 Main St., is offering a series of seven “conversations” for anyone interested in preparing for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation.

The series is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 2. Candidates who participate will be presented to Bishop Stokes when he visits Christ Church on Nov. 23.

– Bone marrow drive set for Milltown Day

Thomas Dumanski Jr. of Milltown was diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease shortly after birth last December. Due to the severity of the disease, he needed a bone marrow transplant. His older sister, Jenna, donated her bone marrow to Tommy, who underwent eight days of chemotherapy in August.

In honor of Tommy, a bone marrow donor-registration drive will take place during Milltown Day, which will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at Borough Park, Violet Terrace and JFK Boulevard, Milltown. Rain date is Oct. 5.

– Talk to shed light on ‘Hollywood Romance’

Film expert Walter Choroszewski will offer a presentation titled “Classic Hollywood Romance — On Screen and Off” 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Sayreville Public Library, Washington Road.

Choroszewski will speak on the roots of American cinema from the silent-screen era through the golden age, as he reviews some of the most well-known romantic movies ever made and adds stories of the films’ on-screen celebrity couples and their off-screen love lives. Hollywood’s longest marriages will be showcased and contrasted with some of its shortest and most unusual romances.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Sayreville Public Library.

– ‘Flamenco Journey’ will honor Lucena

Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre will present its production of “A 40-Year Flamenco Journey” 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Hamilton Stage for the Performing Arts, 360 Hamilton St., Rahway.

The all-star celebration of flamenco and Spanish dance will honor Eva Lucena, Alborada’s artistic director. The performance will feature highlights of Lucena’s 40-year career in dance.

Tickets cost $20 for adults, $12 for seniors and students with identification.

– Vehicles, vendors welcome at car show

The South Amboy-Sayreville Rotary will sponsor its sixth annual Rotary Road Show 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Oasis Chevrolet, 1292 Route 9 south, Old Bridge. Rain date is Oct. 12.

The show is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks, motorcycles and imports. More than 20 trophies will be awarded. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Vehicle registration is $10 in advance, $15 on day of show. Vendors are sought.

– Participants sought for juried art show

The Monroe Township Cultural Arts Commission will sponsor its annual Juried Art Show Oct. 21-28 at the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza.

Artists should present their work 3-7 p.m. Oct. 14 in the conference room at the library. Artwork not accepted must be picked up 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 16. Adam Swart, a professional artist and educator, will judge the show.

Artists of all ages are invited to participate. All work must be original.

– Rescue groups slated for Dog Walk-a-Thon

The North Brunswick Humane Association will hold its 11th annual Dog Walk-a-Thon and Dog Adoption Day event 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 5, rain or shine, at North Brunswick Community Park, 2350 Route 130 South. On-site registration begins at 10 a.m.

A costume contest, games, music, prizes and refreshments are planned. This year’s event will also feature Rescue Row, where local shelters and rescue groups will be on hand with adoptable dogs. Vendors are welcome.

– Parents invited to ADHD support group

The Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD) of Central Jersey ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) Parent Support Group will meet at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Old Bridge Public Library, Route 516 and Cottrell Road.

The group, which meets on the second Wednesday of every month, is designed for parents, guardians, caregivers, educators and others involved with a child or young adult affected by ADHD. Meetings are free of charge and open to the public. Childcare will not be provided.

– Blessing of Animals scheduled for Oct. 5

Nativity Lutheran Church, 552 Ryders Lane, comer of Dunhams corner Road, East Brunswick, will hold its Community Blessing of the Animals 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 on the church lawn.

All pets must be leashed or in carriers. Participants are asked to bring donations of dry Purina dog, cat, puppy and kitten food; canned dog and cat food; dog treats; and bleach and trash bags. Items will benefit New Beginnings Animal Rescue, a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter located at 706-R Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.

– Haunted House set for weekends in October

The Middlesex County 4-H Teen Council will sponsor its fundraising Haunted House and Haunted Hayride 7-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Oct. 4-25 at the Middlesex County 4-H Center, Cranbury and Fern roads, East Brunswick.

Less “spooky” activities, including pumpkin decorating and remote-control car demonstrations, will be available for children. The 4-H Tiki-Hut will be open for snacks and Halloween treats.

Admission is $4 per person. Proceeds will go to 4-H Project GIFT, a free day of holiday shopping for Middlesex County families in need.

– Freedman to offer presentation at library

Dr. Ken Freedman will present “Unlocking Your Body’s Energy for Power and Healing” 7-9 p.m. Oct. 2 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center.

Freedman will discuss removing barriers and finding the power to self-heal and safeguard against stress. Admission to the program is free of charge.
