Local musicians to perform with Rutgers Symphonic Band

The Rutgers Symphony Band will dedicate a performance to trombonist, band leader and composer Arthur Pryor (1870-1942) in “Americana on the Raritana,” a pops concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at the Nicholas Music Center, in the Mason Gross Performing Arts Center, 85 George St. , Douglass campus of Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

Local students who will be performing include Matthew Bergman, Brian Eichert, Rebecca Hughes, Chris Kaminski, Rich Paull, Jeremy Ting and Raymond Wang, all of Edison;

Peter Danch, of Howell;

Jeff Leidner, of Iselin;

Carlee lghossain, of Kendall Park;

Theodore Aretakis, Daniel Choi, Brendan Kingsley and Mark Moroney, all of North Brunswick;

Samantha Hantzepetros, of Millstone Township;

Evan Glickman, of Old Bridge;

Katharine Mattina, of Rumson;

Amanda Kosa, Keith Lalley and Drew Weinstein, all of South Brunswick; and

Jeffrey Smith and Gina Vingara, of Spotswood.

The evening will include several special guests, including Joe Alessi, principal trombone for the New York Philharmonic, and Mason Gross vocal professor Eduardo Chama. Chama will narrate Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait.”

The 90-member Symphony Band will also perform Pryor arrangements of “Blue Bells of Scotland” and his composition “Fantastic Polka,” both of which will feature Alessi solos. John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” will be featured, as well as Artie Shaw’s “Clarinet Concerto,” with the Mason Gross School’s Joseph D’Auguste soloing.
