The Old Bridge Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Rutgers SAFETY Clinic (Sports Awareness For Educating Today’s Youth). To be eligible for the civil immunity protection provided by the Little League Law (A:62A-6), volunteer coaches are required to attend a safety orientation and training skills program. The Rutgers SAFETY Clinic is based on the Minimum Standards for Volunteer Coaches for Safety Orientation and Training Skills Programs, and has been tested in court as having met the standards. The clinic is open for all sports and will be held at the Old Bridge Civic Center on March 10 from 7-10 p.m. In-person registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. The cost will be $30, cash only. Registration will be taken at the door and will be limited to the first 100 people. Participants should bring a pen or pencil and will receive their certification cards and coaches’ book at the end of the clinic. The Old Bridge Senior Knights won the Mid Monmouth Basketball League championship, defeating Millstone in the final. The Knights are Glenn Anderson, Kahill Bennett, Justin Conover, Marcus Crawford, Danny Dirscherl, Chris Donnelly, Jamaar Figueroa, Akili Galloway, Freddy Giorlando, Justin Linkletter, Joe Lobue, Ray Reyes, Rafael Vasco and John Zimmerlink. The Sayrewoods South Little League will hold its registration Feb. 8 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at the league’s clubhouse on Fox Street (off Cindy Street). Registration fee is $65 for one child, $85 for two or more children, and $50 for T-ball (5-year-olds). A work bond of $100 is due at registration. Rider University freshman Robin Mesina, of Sayreville, took 12th place in the 500m (1:05.60) at the Husky Invitational at Northeastern University, Boston, on Jan. 26.

The Sayreville Middle School Wrestling Team competed in the Central Jersey Intermediate School Wrestling Tournament on Saturday in Old Bridge and came away with a third-place team trophy and 10 individual places in the tournament. Eighty-pound Scott Poore and 90-pound Eric Tsang both took home first-place honors for the Sayreville seventh- and eighth-grade squad. Five Middle School wrestlers took home second-place gold medals. Mike Valardi (115 pounds), Shaun Redding (144 pounds), Keith Woods (158 pounds), Brian Ramerez (170 pounds) and Mike Valez (185 pounds) each fought hard to bring the silver medals to Sayreville. Michael Knight took fourth in the 95-pound division, Mike Cuozol took fourth at 120 pounds, and Brian Nowicki finished fourth at 138 pounds.
The executive board of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association invites female golfers from Middlesex County to join members in playing a friendly, competitive round of golf on Thursday mornings from April 1 through Nov. 1. Golfers should have a knowledge of the rules of the game and be capable of playing the round in a timely fashion. Flights will be established depending on level of competency. Prizes are awarded for the weekly competitions and trophies are awarded at the closing luncheon, in November to tournament winners. The Middlesex County Over 50 Softball League is now accepting applications from individuals wishing to play softball in 2002. This is a slow-pitch, arc softball league where recreation and safety come first. All games are played on Saturday mornings at county area fields, and the season begins on April 13 and ends in late August. Eligible players must reach their 50th birthday no later than Dec. 31.
