The U-9 Old Bridge Breakers soccer team was home at Higgins Field for a rematch with the Twin County Junior Blackjacks. Security was present, as the visitors were met by the solid defensive wall of Nick Cousillas, Jake Perlmutter and Louie Petrozziello, who were able to contain their opponents’ early rushes and kept the ball in the Blackjack end to create scoring chances for the Breaker offense. Goalie Chris Botros was his usual dependable self, providing the added layer of defensive security with smart netminding and a few diving and smothering saves when the occasion arose. Hazem Miawad opened the scoring in the sixth minute for the Breakers, on a perfect cross from Cameron Allen for the first strike. However, despite a barrage of shots that followed in the ensuing minutes by Jonas Melendez, Chris Cesario, Liam Habel and Tyler Earl, the Breakers were not able to convert for the rest of the half, as the Blackjacks hung tough and managed to tie the game in the 17th minute to deadlock the score at 1-1 at the half. But the Breaker offense was determined to regain the edge, wasting no time just after the second-half whistle blew. Hazem did it again in the 26th minute, this time on assists from Cameron and Michael Loeffler, on a tally that proved to be all the Breakers needed. Nicky Petrozziello followed up four minutes later by converting on a penalty kick for an insurance goal in a 3-1 victory for the Breakers. The first-place Breakers improved to 5-0-0 and will head to Middletown next Saturday for their weather-delayed showdown with the Freedom, an also undefeated division rival.
The U-9 Old Bridge Storm girls soccer team had an awesome tournament in Freehold Frightfest VII this past weekend with victories over the Millstone Storm, 5-0, and the Manalapan Shining Stars, 2-0. The game against Millstone started out with a goal by Megan Catrola on a tap play with Alyssa Somohano. The Storm girls never looked back and continued to rally with another goal by Megan, two goals by Kaitlyn McAnally and their fifth goal by Leandra Cohen. Kristen Failla and Marti Stewart provided assists. Goalies Marti and Alyssa, along with Maria Pagiazitis, Taylor Carroll and Munevera Sela, provided a stellar defense for the clean sheet. In their second game, Manalapan was defeated on goals by Kaitlyn and Leandra. At goal, Marti stopped all shots for the second shutout. The Storm girls played hard every minute of both games for a total team effort.
