The Old Bridge Rockets captured their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Marlboro Storm Gold, Sunday in Marlboro. Goalies Frank Roselli and Harry Grewal, sweeper Jordan Moretti, and fullbacks Sami Abdishuban and Christian Llerena held Marlboro to four shots for the match.

In the 29th minute, Dan Scalgione scored the first goal of the new season on beautiful service from Caine Czerula, and in the 36th minute, Nick Petruzzi scored on an assist from Charles Mantione. Midfielders Richard Loeffler and Adam Eyerman were on their game, and the Rockets controlled play the entire contest. Nick Santurro, Kevin DeMaio and Josh Stein-Ortiz provided spirited play in a total team effort.

The U8 Old Bridge Thunder defeated the Manalapan Red Devils 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Manalapan to capture their very first victory as a travel soccer team. Goalie Gina Colamonico tallied six saves, and fullbacks Nicole Velez and Kerri Caruso provided stellar defense for the clean sheet. Striker Angelique Giglio blasted her first goal of the season from an assist by Vanessa Mantione. Midfielders Alexis Suarez, Kristina Galiano, Tanvi Lodhia, Meaghan Kenny and Alyssa Kramer provided spirited play on both the attack and defense, while strikers Alyssa Somohano, Taylor Carroll and Kristen Failla put pressure on the defense all afternoon.

Old Bridge’s Diana Nelson, the goalie for Northeastern University’s women’s field hockey team, was named the Division I field hockey player of the week after making six saves in the Huskies’ two wins last week, including a come-from-behind win over Princeton in which she made two spectacular saves in the final six minutes, and an overtime win over Penn State.

The Old Bridge Vipers, a U12 boys travel soccer team, took first place in the Branchburg Labor Day Tournament. The Vipers scored 15 goals in the four games they played, with scoring coming from eight players. Great defense and flashy goalkeeping contributed to the successful weekend.

The tournament players were Alex Barnhard, Greg Belanger, James Coscia, Kerry Glynn, Christian Grillo, Anthony Jichetti, Christian Kauzljar, Shane Raymond, Nick Rojewski, Michael Stetson, Joe Vazza, Rebecca Vazza, Kevin Geoghegan and P.J. Oris. The coaches are Joe Vazza, George Kauzljar, Rob Grillo and Greg Belanger.

Friday night, the Knights of Columbus Boxing Club in South River will hold a busy night of boxing, with featured bouts including South Africa’s Joe Njau and Ireland’s Matthew King.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $15 for ringside. The event starts at 8 p.m.
