PLUMSTED – Additional donations from several local businesses mean an Independence Day fireworks display will last longer in Plumsted this year.
The “Rockin’ Fireworks” event, sponsored by the Plumsted Business and Merchants Association (PBMA), will feature a 20-minute fireworks display that will light up the night sky with an even larger finale than last year.
The July 11 event for people of all ages will be held at New Egypt High School, Evergreen Road. Gates will open at 4 p.m. for an afternoon and evening of fun activities.
Mayor Jack Trotta said $2,500 donations from the New Egypt Agway and the New Egypt Marketplace will allow event organizers to provide a longer fireworks display.
“What we (officials) have done in the last few years is commit $5,000” to the event,” he said. “This year we will have $10,000 going to the show.”
Trotta said the additional $5,000 from Agway and the New Egypt Marketplace was in addition to existing donations from the two businesses, making the sudden boost in funding a welcome surprise for the PBMA.
“We are very pleased to have their special sponsorship, but we value all of our sponsors through all the years,” the mayor said.
Trotta said other sponsors for this year’s event include Lacey’s Auto Parts, Price’s Recycling, the New Egypt Flea Market and JL Automotive and Towing.
Family activities will begin at 4 p.m. There will be food vendors, games and live music starting at 6 p.m. The music is what gives the celebration its “Rockin’ Fireworks” moniker.
The Happenings, who recorded a 1966 version of “See You in September,” will headline the show. An all-girl tribute band, The Chiclettes, will open the show.
The “Rockin’ Fireworks” will run from 4-10 p.m. July 11 at the New Egypt High School athletic fields The rain date is July 12. Admission is free; donations to the PBMA to help further cover the cost of the fireworks display are welcome.
