CentraState offers a support group for people with diabetes

The Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center at CentraState Medical Center is offering a support group for people with diabetes and their families.The group will meet on the third Wednesday of every month from 1-2 p.m. in the Jack Aaronson Conference Center in The Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus, 901 W. Main St., Freehold.

The first support group, on April 15, will discuss the connection between diabetes and sleep apnea, the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing, and be presented by Isabella Kaplunovitch, coordinator,The Center for Sleep Disorders at CentraState.

Research shows that 40 percent of people with sleep apnea have diabetes. Participants who attend this support group will learn the associations between sleep apnea and insulin resistance and autonomic neuropathy; the effects sleep apnea has on glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes; and its symptoms and signs in a diabetic patient. Kaplunovitch will also review the pathophysiology, clinical significance, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep apnea.

The Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center at CentraState is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.
